Berne Ready Mix named Chamber Member of the Month for April
Berne Ready Mix was recognized by the Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association for excellence in concrete construction in the institutional category. Berne Ready Mix was awarded the bid for concrete in the construction of the South Adams School project. A large plaque, an indication of the honor bestowed by IRMCA, is proudly displayed in the Berne Ready Mix office at the corner of Behring Street and Parr Road in Berne. The Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association is involved in a broad range of events, marketing, promotions, education, and government affairs. It is also associated with several other concrete construction companies and is a member of the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association. Over 70 producer and supplier companies are members of the statewide organization.
Matt Subler, sales manager, accepted the honor from IRMCA on behalf of Berne Ready Mix in Indianapolis earlier this year. Matt Subler explained that special mixes were used to color the concrete and add texture at the entrance just outside the elementary and middle school office. Decorative stars are etched in the sidewalk and surrounded by concrete that has the appearance of slate.
The visually appealing entrance to the office area will last indefinitely. According to Matt, the design-build process allowed Berne Ready Mix to work with the architects and other contractors and to implement new ideas as construction progressed. Official change orders were not essential saving time and money. It was much more than cosmetic changes that brought attention to the local ready mix plant. Matt said that methods used by BRM in pouring the concrete on the floors in the new gym saved preparation work for those who put down the hardwood floors. Another innovation added during the construction process was done in cooperation with the masons. Holes in the concrete blocks are normally filled with cement when the walls reach 6’ in height.
The process is repeated after another 6’ of block is laid. BRM was able to pour concrete in the blocks from 30’ as an economical measure on the new school. Berne Ready Mix announced within the past year their expansion to Wells County. Nate Subler, personnel manager, reported that a satellite batch site will be located along SR 124 west of Bluffton. It will allow Berne Ready Mix to more easily load concrete and reach customers in that area. The opening of that facility will be the 6th site of what started 50 years ago as St. Henry Tile Company in St. Henry, Ohio.
Additional sites in Ohio are located in Celina, Greenville, and Minster. Like the original plant, Berne Ready Mix specializes in selling concrete, making concrete tile and selling brick and blocks. The Berne Chamber of Commerce is pleased to honor a local member for their recognition at the state level within their industry.
