Local residents observe "sacred day" at memorial service

"Comrades, this day is sacred," proclaimed Les Wagner, commander of Berne American Legion Post 468, at Monday's annual Memorial Day Service which was held at the local post.
"We are surrounded by the invisible presence of those who have gone before," said Wagner to a crowd of local residents who hovered in the shade to avoid the searing Memorial Day heat. "Let us renew our pledge of loyalty to our country and its flag."
This year's service included guest speaker Tony Giltner, operation manager for WZBD radio station. Others assisting in the service included the local Boy Scout troop, members of the South Adams High School band, American Legion 468 Color Guard, VFW 6751 Color G...
