Mayors unite for Hope Clinic ribbon cutting
Berne Mayor Bill McKean and Decatur Mayor John Schultz participated in the ribbon cutting for the newly renovated and expanded Hope Clinic in Decatur on Friday afternoon. The clinic, which is located at 970 S. 11th St., was recently completed from a full restoration that allowed the local clinic to move into the expanded facility.
Those who had made significant contributions – board members, staff and city officials gathered for the 5:30 p.m. special ribbon cutting.
This Tuesday, there will be an open house at the Decatur facility to showcase it to the general public to look over the potential in the new facility.
“We want the community to see, not only the renovation, but discover what we do at the clinic – the pregnancy test, ultrasound verification – most people don’t understand what we provide here,” said executive director Teri Hogg.
Hogg referred to other services such as maternity assistance, spiritual mentoring, peer assistance and loaning of baby clothes.
“When we go through the education program, they can earn baby bucks,” continued Hogg. “They can be redeemed for cribs, diapers, clothes, cloth products, anything they might need to raise their children.”
Hogg explained that the clinic opens into the “Hall of Hope,” which features pictures taken by Tom and Melinda Sprunger. The pictures are presented as a picture of a barren mountain, a picture of grass forming in the valley and finishes with photographs of green and plush mountains.
“This is imagery, representing first, how massive the challenge is facing unwed and young mothers, an unplanned pregnancy,” Hogg said. “Then as things move along, they don’t seem as bleak anymore. The green mountain scenes represent how things seem more doable as they move along.”
Following the formal dedication, those who wished were invited to participate in a prayer walk on behalf of the clinic. Shelia Graber had designed a brochure with devotional readings and Bible verses appropriate for each room.
Prayers were written for the reception room, hall of honor, baby bucks and loaner clothes, video education, counseling, classroom/board room, pregnancy counseling, ultrasound room, staff offices, break room/work room/laundry and administrative assistant/welcome area.
