Forty years later, The Berne Witness lives again

Many in this community weren’t born the last time the local paper flashed the heading that is being projected in today’s paper. For others, nostalgia is more like it as they recall the paper of their youth, The Berne Witness, along with stories of such moments as the great Bear teams of the early 60s edited by the town’s most beloved editor for many years, Simon Schwartz. The 1979 Adams County History, in an extensive history of local journalism, states that, “On Aug. 10, 1976, Edward E. Liechty, in his column, ‘This ‘N’ That,’ announced the end of The Berne Witness, for nearly 80 years an outstanding publishing concern, once the biggest in the county, had gone under.” The history states that at the time Art and Carl Muselman, sons of Economy Printing Concern founder Christian Muselman, saved the publication by buying the newspaper publishing rights, and the mailing list of the Adams County Sun and Berne Daily Witness. “They had previously announced a new paper, th...
