Two hundredth anniversary flag to start flying

Berne Mayor Bill McKean told Berne City Council members on Monday evening that state officials have asked local communities to start flying special Indiana 200th anniversary flags on Dec. 11. McKean said that the designated time is the beginning of the 200th anniversary celebration, Dec. 11, 2016. Dec. 11 is the 199th year since Indiana’s birth to state hood occurred on Dec. 11, 1816. “Chambers are working on this all over the state,” said McKean. “There’s more coming.” McKean said municipalities are allowed to fly the special flag all year, but not in the place of the Indiana flag. “It may be that we will fly it initially, then retire it for the winter and then start flying it again in spring and summer,” said McKean. McKean said that after many years of decorating and keeping up with the downtown flower displays, the Berne Garden Club is stepping back because a new group of individuals has volunteered to take up the downtown care.
