Calvin E. Beitler, 86, of Berne passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2012 in Fort Wayne. He was born on March 19, 1926 in Adams County to Hugo and Gertrude (Hirschy) Beitler. He was married on September 20, 1947 to Alberta Schenkel.
He was a member of the Cross United Church of Christ, where he sang in the choir and served as deacon. He retired in 1989 from Micro-Precision Corp as a machinist. He worked at Dunbar Furniture and later for the Shell Service Station. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Army Air Corp and was a member of the Berne American Legion Post #468 for 67 years. He was a faithful member of the Berne Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years and served as assistant fire chief. He was a "Life" Boy Scout and was a member of the Adams County Civil Defense Unit during the Korean War. His special interests included woodworking, music, gardening, and landscaping.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, David (Diane) Beitler of Berne; and Thomas (Cindy) Beitler of Plymouth, Wisconsin; two daughters, Rebecca (Joe) Liechty of Fort Wayne; and Jill (Tony) Miller of Richmond; brother, Richard Beitler of Berne; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Rev. Charles "Chuck" Beitler; grandson, Kent Beitler; sister, Geraldine Beitler; and three brothers, Chester, James, and Roger Beitler.
Visitation will be from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 5 and one hour prior to the 10:30 a.m. funeral service on Friday, July 6 at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home in Berne. Officiating will be Pastor Jerry Flueckiger. Burial will take place at the MRE Cemetery in Berne. Graveside military rites will be provided by the Berne Post #468.
