Doris Elizabeth Neuenschwander, 88, passed away at 4:14 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, 2013 at the Otterbein Home in St. Marys, Ohio. She was born on September 27, 1924 in Shelby County to Fred C. and Margaret (Stewart) Hetzler. She was married on April 25, 1943 in Shelby County to John C. Worthington. He preceded her in death on September 6, 1981. She married on February 12, 1983 in Berne to Simon “Sam” Neuenschwander. He preceded her in death on November 27, 2003.
She was a lifelong member of Spring Creek Baptist Church in Shelby County and also attended the First Mennonite Church in Berne. After graduation from Green Township High School in Shelby County, Ohio in 1942, she worked as a cashier at Rapp’s Women’s Store in Piqua and in Logan, Ohio. After moving to Van Wert, Ohio in 1968, she managed the Schiff Shoe Store and worked at Central Mutual Insurance Co. In 1971, she and John bought the Photo Star Newspaper in Willshire, Ohio. He published the newspaper until his death in 1981, at which time she assumed the duties until 1987, when she retired and sold the newspaper. She was a member of the Peony Chapter of American Business Women’s Association, who voted her Woman of the Year for 1980. She served on the Board of Trustees for the United Way, and the Advisory Board for the Visiting Nurses. On July 17, 2004, she moved to Otterbein Retirement Community in St. Marys, Ohio, where she found a whole new family and lived her remaining years.
From her first marriage, she is survived by three sons, Robert (Patricia) Worthington of Encampment, Wyoming; Larry (Mary) Worthington of Sidney, Ohio; and Freddy (Brenda) Worthington of Springboro, Ohio; six grandsons, Mark (Lieve) Worthington of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Michael Worthington of Loramie, Wyoming; Timothy (Jodi) Worthington of Russia, Ohio; Daniel Worthington of Toledo, Ohio; Todd (LaDonna) Worthington of Middletown, Ohio; and Chad (Jessica) Worthington of Springboro, Ohio; three step-granddaughters, Violet (Jacob) Sanderson; and Mari Mahoney of Wyoming; and Marsha Mahoney of Colorado; 10 great-grandchildren, Meghan, Dustin, Cody, Trent, Blake, Ireland, Grace, Reagan, Addison, Anastasia, and Kyle Worthington; three step-great-grandchildren, Collin, Abigail, and Sarah Ann Sanderson; and niece, Donna Mae (Stephen) Worl.
From her second marriage, she is survived by three stepdaughters, Susan (Dave) Wulliman of Berne; Jo (Eldon) Williams of Celina, Ohio; and Denis (Dan) Duvall of Fort Wayne; 11 step-grandchildren, Todd Wulliman of Fort Wayne; Kurt (Lucie) Wulliman of Nashville, Tennessee; Katie (Jason) Andrew of Celina, Ohio; Amanda (Shane) Tickle of Rockford, Ohio; Nichole (Russell) Paul of Darlington, Wisconsin; and Amber Ballinger; and Ashley (Brad) Pearson, both of Fort Wayne; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Donald (Mabel) Hetzler of Sidney, Ohio; two nephews, Paul and David Hetzler, both from Sidney, Ohio, and stepdaughter, Ann Zollinger of Fort Wayne.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 6 at the Suber-Shively Funeral Home, 201 W. Main St., Fletcher, Ohio and one hour prior to the 11:00 a.m. funeral service on Friday, June 7 at the Otterbein Retirement Community Chapel, 11300 Circle Drive, St. Marys, Ohio, 45885. Officiating will be Chaplains Vince Lavieri and Carol Saney. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at Pasco Cemetery.
