James “Jim” Vanlandingham, 85, of Columbia City passed away at 12:15 a.m. on Friday, August 16, 2013 at Parkview Whitley Hospital in Columbia City following a short illness. He was born on April 29, 1928 to James and Betty (Crowe) Vanlandingham. He was married on May 11, 1991 at the First Mennonite Church in Berne to Sharon Liechty.
He graduated in 1946 from Mt. Summit High School in Mt. Summit. He retired from AEP (American Electric Power/Indiana & Michigan) following 42 years of service. He loved spending time with his family, golfing, traveling, and working on cars.
He is survived by his wife of Tri Lakes, Columbia City; three sons, Kent (Teresa) Vanlandingham of Berne; Anthony “Tony” (Laurie) Vanlandingham of Decatur; and Jeffery “Jeff” (Sheila) Vanlandingham of Columbia City; step-son, John (Amy) Kolb of Kouts; 10 grandchildren, Teresa (Ezra) Lavy of Convoy, Ohio; Adam (Kelly) Vanlandingham; and Ashley (Justin Mac) Vanlandingham, both of Decatur; Matthew Vanlandingham of Marion; Casey (Sharon) Vanlandingham of Bluffton; Katie (Luke) Shifferly of Monroe; Caleb (Alisha Smith) Vanlandingham of Waynedale; Tabitha Vanlandingham of Columbia City; and Emily and Maci Kolb of Kouts; two brothers-in-law, Michael D. Liechty of Geneva; and John (Sonya) Murray of Palmdale, California; sister-in-law, Susan (Raymond) Christian of North Judson; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Shirley (Murray) Vanlandingham; daughter, Teresa at birth; two sisters, Grace Shock; and Helen Hagy; and brother-in-law, Donald Liechty.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, The American Cancer Society, or the donor’s choice.
