Larry L. Uhrick, 62, of Wolcottville, formerly of Berne, died on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at his home. He was born on June 14, 1949 in Adams County to Elmer and Norma Jean (Swygart) Uhrick. He was married on August 15, 1970 to Jane Neuenschwander.
He is the former Chief of Police of the Berne Police Department. He spent 23½ in the military. From 1966 to March 1970, he served in the U.S. Marine Corp, receiving the Good Conduct Marine Corp Medal and served in Vietnam from July 1967 to March 1969. He also served five years in the U.S. Army. He then served with the U.S. Air Force during Desert Storm from January 1991 to June 1991 and retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1995 as SMSgt.(E8) Security Superintendent with the Security Police. He served in Bosnia as a civilian with the security police in 2004.
He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Leatherneck Marine Corp Club in Columbia City, the American Legion, Police Chief Association, Fraternal Order of Police, Sheriff Association and the VFW. He was a member of Grace Bible Church in Berne. He enjoyed refinishing small pieces of furniture, fishing and traveling. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his father of Bluffton; his wife; twin brother, Kerry (Marilyn) Uhrick of Sevierville, Tennessee; two sisters, Judy (Jerry) Wyatt of Warsaw; and Joyce (Greg) Smith of Decatur; two step-brothers, Bill (Claudia) Bergdoll of Angola; and Jim (Sheila) Bergdoll of Michigan; and three step-sisters, Terri (Roger) Black; Cindy (Mike) Wolfe; and Ann (Jim) Harshman, all of Bluffton.
He was preceded in death by his mother; and step-mother, Madonna (Bergdoll) Uhrick.
Visitation will from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 7 at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home in Berne and one hour prior to the 10:30 a.m. funeral service on Wednesday, February 8 at the Grace Bible Church in Berne. Officiating will be Pastor Ryon Adcock.
