Robert Ellenberger, 83, long-time and well-known auctioneer/realtor, died on Friday, January 18, 2013 at Bluffton Regional Medical Center. He was born on October 23, 1929 in Wells County to Jesse and Mary Ellenberger.
He joined the company of Ellenberger Brothers in 1949 and became a partner with his uncle, Dale Ellenberger. They enjoyed this partnership for the next 25 plus years. He was active in the Indiana Auctioneers Association, served as president in 1976, and continued to serve on the board for 11 years. He was awarded the Auctioneer of the Year in 1974.
He was appointed by Governor Robert Orr to serve on the Indiana Auctioneers Commission and was reappointed in 1985 and 1988. He was a recipient of Sagamore of the Wabash, presented by Governor Orr in 1991.
In 2009, he joined Caldwell Banker Holloway & Holloway Auction to continue working full-time selling real estate to the present, and serving as a consultant and mentor to Holloway Auction Company.
He was president of Adams, Jay, Wells Board of Realtors in 1964, Realtor of the Year in 1979 and 2005, and in 2011 was inducted into the Upstar Alliance of Realtors Hall of Fame. The award is given as a lifetime achievement award that spans his 60 plus year career.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Anne; two sisters; and a brother.
He was preceded in death by two brothers; and one sister.
Visitation will be from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 24 at Thoma/Rich, Chaney & Lemler Funeral Home in Bluffton. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 25 at the First United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Pastor Chad Ringger and Life Celebrant Jeff Lemler. Burial will be at Six Mile Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Wells County Arts, Commerce & Visitor’s Center Maintenance Fund c/o the Wells County Foundation, the Wells County Animal Care Fund c/o the Wells County Foundation, First We Care, or to the First United Methodist Church.
