F.M. “Ted” Montgomery, 96, of Portland passed away on Monday, March 25, 2013 at Persimmon Ridge Healthcare in Portland. He was born on August 18, 1916 in Bryant to Frederick and Clara (Engle) Montgomery. He was married on December 31, 1937 to Mary “Betty” Leonhard.
He was an insurance agent with Prudential and Peoples Home Life and was former mayor of Portland from 1963 to 1967. He was a basketball official for many years and basketball radio announcer for WPGW. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Portland Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge #87 F.&A.M., Scottish Rite, Shriners, Jayland Trotting Association and United States Trotting Association.
He is survived by a son, Phillip Montgomery of Portland; two daughters, Jane (John) Minch of Berne; and Nan (Phil) Rowles of Portland; sister, Esther Resler of Berne; sister-in-law, Helen Montgomery of Los Alamitos, California; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife on July 17, 2001.
Visitation will be from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 28 at Baird-Freeman Funeral Home in Portland. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 29 at the funeral home. Officiating will be Pastor Mark Strietelmeier. Burial will be at the Green Park Cemetery.
