Buzzer beater lifts Braves
DECATUR – Zack Macklin disappeared behind a screen and re-emerged wide open under the basket when Parker Zeser found him with an inbounds pass and an easy score to give Bellmont a last-second 56-55 victory over South Adams Saturday night in varsity boys’ basketball.
The Braves (4-4) found themselves down by one after Marcus Teeter buried a clutch 3-pointer with five seconds left on the clock to put South Adams ahead 55-54. Teeter’s triple capped a breakthrough performance for the freshman, enjoying his first substantial varsity time this season. Teeter rewarded the Starfires with 18 points – 15 of those coming on 3-pointers.
Bellmont used its final timeout following the Teeter 3-pointer to set up a full court play and nearly got it all the way down the floor, but it was knocked out of bounds by South Adams’ Derek Wanner. That set up the game-winning play under the Braves’ basket.
The contest resulted in several changes in the South Adams lineup as Coach Andy Brown began inserting a trio of reserve players in the second quarter. Teeter, Cole Myers and Justin Nussbaum have all spent the majority of the season gaining experience in junior varsity games, but all three played three quarters with the varsity Friday night.
“The guys knew we were going to make some changes in our rotation, and we had guys respond in a big way,” said Brown. “We had a lot of youth out there. Freshmen. Sophomores. We saw some mistakes, but I can’t fault them one bit. I’m really, really proud of the way we performed tonight. Proud that we were able to come back from some of the deficits we had.”
Bellmont doubled South Adams at 12-6 in the first quarter as the Braves started heating up from long range. Josh Brune hit the second of his two first quarter triples to give the Braves the six-point lead. Bellmont connected on nine 3-pointers total in the contest.
Cameron Bienz sank a 3-pointer in the second quarter to put Bellmont ahead 17-10, and Zeser followed with another triple to give the Braves a 20-11 advantage. Seth King scored with back-to-back layups to put Bellmont ahead 27-14 later in the second quarter, but South Adams answered with an 8-0 run to finish the half.
Bellmont maintained a five-point advantage after three quarters, but Teeter quickly helped South Adams close that gap with his three late 3-pointers.
Marco Vasquez did his scoring early and finished with 16 points for the Starfires.
Bienz and Zeser scored 12 each for the Braves.
South Adams won the junior varsity contest 51-41.
The Starfires travel to Leo this Saturday. The Lions are 5-3. Bellmont will visit Columbia City Saturday.
