Gillette sets world record
Berne native Melissa Gillette is now a world record holder.
Gillette, daughter of Jim and Bertie Lehman of Berne, won the Maple Leaf Indoor Marathon in Goshen this past Sunday in 3:08.53.8 setting a new world best according to the Association of Road Racing Statisticians.
Gillette, 29, shattered the previous world record of 3:16.24 held by Marina Bychkova of Russia, and set in January 2009 in Moscow. Two of the top seven women’s indoor marathons times have been clocked on the indoor track at Goshen College (3:26.02 by Laura Gillette in 2011 ranks seventh all-time).
Gillette now has 13 career marathon wins in 40 attempts, and holds four course records. She has a marathon personal record of 2:56.37, which she ran at the 2011 Rochester Marathon.
She is a two-time NAIA All-American in the marathon.
