Jets lead seeding in ACAC mat tourney

Intriguing possible matchups litter the pairings for the Allen County Athletic Conference wrestling tournament, which were released by tourney host Adams Central Monday evening. The tournament is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday morning in the main gym at Adams Central. Admission is $5 for grades one and older. All fans are asked to park in the north lot and enter through the main north entrance.
South Adams is the defending tournament champion, but Adams Central is the front-runner in 2012, having wrapped up the round robin championship with a 7-0 mark. The Jets have more number one seeds (4) than any other team in the tournament, and they are tied with South Adams for the most seeded wrestlers overall (11).
Central has seven wrestlers seeded in the top two, giving them odds to advance seven into the finals barring upsets. South Adams has five wrestlers seeded in the top two.
“We will have to wrestle extremely well up and down the lineup to knock Adams Central off,” South Adams coach Eric Myers stated. “The guys will have to be on their ‘A’ game from start to finish.”
Myers pointed to 145 and 182 pounds as the toughest weight classes in the tournament.
Woodlan’s Cody Zink is the top seed at 145 and Bluffton’s Philip Gerber is number two. The third, fourth and fifth seeds went to Leo, South Adams and Adams Central respectively. The first round match pitting South Adams’ Charlie Hirschy against Adams Central’s Zac Yoder will be pivotal toward team points. Yoder scored a 7-6 victory over Hirschy earlier this season.
Adams Central’s red-hot Ben Pfister landed the number one seed at 182, but a possible semi-final match with South Adams’ Isaac Werst looms. Pfister beat Werst 3-1 in a regular season meeting. The weight class also features Heritage’s Cody Conrad, a conference champion at 170 in 2011 as the two seed, and Leo’s Trevon Carr as the number three seed.
The 138-pound class also brings a lot of intrigue with four strong wrestlers getting the top seeds, including Garrett’s 2011 state qualifier Brayden Moreau as the number four seed. That should put South Adams’ Todd Batt, the number one seed, in a tough semi-final if seeds hold. Bluffton’s Jon Raugh is the number two seed and Central’s Luke Liter is number four.
“By seeding criteria (Moreau) fell all the way down to a four seed,” Myers explained. “He had an injury and started the season at the Al Smith Invitational (at Mishawaka). His losses were to some major studs, but due to not meeting the criteria of head-to-head wins or common opponents, he lost on the win percentage criteria. Rough.”
South Adams freshman Sawyer Miller is 28-1 this season with his lone loss coming against Garrett’s Hayden Lee (4-0) early in the campaign. Lee is seeded No. 1 at 106 with Miller seeded second.
Besides Todd Batt, South Adams has L.J. Moser seeded first at 113. The Starfires’ Eric Pimentel (120) and Jordan Landers (170) are also number two seeds.
Cody Walburn (120), Derek Roe (132) Zeke Schultz (152) and Pfister are the one seeds for Adams Central. Derek Ellinger (126), Chantz Luginbill (160) and Joe Fuelling (285) are number two seeds.
