Starfires rally for home opening win

Three shutout innings of relief from Caleb Sprunger and a big three-run home run by Dustin Wanner helped South Adams overcome a five-run deficit and stage an 8-6 comeback victory over Winchester Tuesday night at Harry F. Anderson Field.
The Starfires (1-1) trailed 6-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, but quickly got on the board. TJ Burnfield led off the inning with a single and later scored on an error, and Caleb Sprunger was hit by a pitch and scored on a wild pitch, but the big blow came when Wanner sent a towering fly ball over the leftfield fence to drive in Gabe Sprunger and Taylor LeFever.
South Adams took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Andrew Smith reached on an error and Burnfield reached on a bad throw to first. A passed ball allowed both runners to advance into scoring position, and Smith later scored the game-winning run on a ground out by Caleb Sprunger. Burnfield added an insurance run when he scored his third run of the game on an error.
Caleb Sprunger notched the pitching win with three innings of relief. He retired eight of the 11 batters he faced on strikes, allowing just two hits. Taylor Smith threw four innings as the Starfire starter, and left trailing 6-1. He struck out eight, walked three and gave up seven hits. Five the six runs Smith allowed were earned. Justin Hersberger took the loss for Winchester.
