“Completely overwhelmed,” is how 2008 Adams Central graduate Cara Lea Hummel described her feelings Sunday evening after being chosen as the 2010 Miss Adams County.
“I love representing Adams County. I love living here; I don’t think I could have chosen a better county to be raised in,” said Hummel, the daughter of Jeff and Dawn Hummel.
“I like everything about this county. I am honored to represent it,” added Hummel.
Other awards included: viewer’s choice, Jacqueline Liechty; second runner-up, Katie Bluhm and first runner-up, Shelby Bluhm.
Garbrielle Reed, newly elected Miss Indiana, 2010, made a guest appearance. Reed, a graduate of Bluffton High School, currently attends Indiana University and will represent Indiana in the Miss America pageant.
“I have always loved this country and its beauty,” Reed said. “I drove back roads all the way up here just so I could enjoy this countryside again.”
Hummel responded to a spontaneous question by noting that if she had 30 minutes to do with as she pleased, she would choose to use the time alone with herself.
“I wouldn’t work during that time. I would just use the time for myself,” said Hummel, who is a junior at Purdue University, majoring in agriculture education.
“I want to pursue a career in agriculture because I have close family ties in ag,” said Hummel following the program. “My high school ag teacher influenced me a lot. I would either like to teach in a local high school or get involved with some agribusiness.”
Hummel, who had been a 10-year 4-H member, said that she appreciated her 4-H experience because it had helped her to grow as a person and to meet a lot of people.
“I chose to become involved with agriculture because I feel that it is growing in a positive direction,” said Hummel. “There are so many more opportunities that are coming up in agriculture than are on the farm. There are so many things you can do with an agriculture degree these days.”
Sunday night’s program had been switched from outdoors to the inside judging arena due to heavy rain in the area late in the afternoon.
Manley, the 2009 queen, quipped that she wore her boots with her gown because she felt more at home in the judging area with boots on, since she had been there so many times wearing them.
“I would like to thank my family and friends for supporting me,” said Manley. “I would like to thank my mother for going with me to the state fair. I felt like I had a special link because my mother knows how to do hair. She took care of that for me.”
Barry Humble, executive director of the Adams County Substance Abuse Awareness Council, emceed the event.
