Lehman Park on countdown for new equipment
The Lehman Park Board is on a countdown to raise another $17,000 toward new park equipment before the Berne City Council meeting on Nov. 26.
The board is currently seeking to match money that would allow for the purchase of new and safe park equipment through a grant. The equipment would be geared for children between the ages of five and 12.
“The grant runs out Dec. 1,” noted board member Amanda Patterson. “We are asking the community to make donations because the grant runs out on Dec. 1.”
Patterson said that approximately $24,000 has been raised so far through the fall park festival, Lehman Park Run/Walk and privation donations.
Patterson said that all donations can be made payable to the City of Berne Park Fund. All donations are tax deductible. For information, call Patterson at 260-849-0612.
In a news release, Patterson said that the total cost of the equipment is $65,731.60. Grant funding eligibility is $29,850.50, which leaves a balance of $41,433.20 to be paid for by the park board.
Patterson said that means that with the $24,000 already raised, another $17,000 needs to be brought in by the next council meeting.
“The park is in desperate need of new equipment and we need this grant,” said Patterson. “This is a long term investment for our community.
Patterson, who lives close to the park and enjoys utilizing it for family outings, said that many are concerned because much of the present equipment has been deemed unsafe.
“We started building funds for this project two years ago,” said Patterson.
“This is not just for my kids; it’s for everyone’s children,” Patterson said. “For stay-at-home moms, this is a safe place to take their children. My little guy is four years old and there is no safe place for him to play. We ride our bikes around the park.
“I am excited about where we are going with this. This project excites me,” continued Patterson. “It’s important that our children be safe as they play.”
Patterson said that she and her husband Landon invest a lot of their family time with their children in good weather. She referred to Lehman Park as, “a place where children can run and be kids.”
