Dorothy M. Sponhower

Dorothy M. Sponhower, 92, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2014 at DeKalb Health in Auburn. She was born on November 10, 1921 in Butler Township, DeKalb County to Charles and Ermina (Paulen) Miller. She was married on January 1, 1940 at Hopewell United Brethren Church to Roy E. Sponhower. They were the first couple to be married at that church and celebrated 64 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on March 29, 2004.
She went all 12 years of school without missing a day and graduated third in her class at Spencerville High School. She worked at the Auburn Rubber Company and Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company and helped her husband on the farm. She was a member of Hopewell United Brethren Church and Jackson Township Homemakers Extension Club. She and her husband loved to travel the world together.
She is survived by three daughters, Jill A. (Jack) Hoard of Spencerville; Joan A. (Carl) Benz of Couch, Missouri; and M. Jane (James) Meshberger of Linn Grove; son, Mark E. (Janis) Sponhower of Auburn; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Tim A. Sponhower; brother, Russell Miller; sister, Grace Fredrick; and two grandchildren, Rene and Todd Benz.
Visitation will be two hours prior to the 2:00 p.m. funeral service on Thursday, May 29 at Hopewell United Brethren Church, 6852 CR 35, Auburn. Officiating will be Pastor John Erwin. Burial will be at Cedar Chapel Cemetery.
